"Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" --Ezekiel 33:11
"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." --2 Peter 3:9

God has never desired to destroy people in their sins. He always leaves a way out: repentance. Think about the original sin in Genesis 3. He still didn't kill them physically (though they did die spiritually), but instead promised a Redeemer. Before the flood (Genesis 6-8), He gave people 120 years of warning before sealing Noah & his family in the ark. In Ezekiel, with chapter after chapter of warning of destruction (which all eventually occurred), He still just wanted them to repent. Finally, with all of humanity, He told us that He sent His Son for us so we can escape hell (John 3, Romans 3:10, 23; 5:8; 6:23; 10:9, 13). God hasn't changed, and He won't (Hebrews 13:8). He isn't some angry Being waiting to smite you for what wrong you've done (but He will judge you as a holy God if you die without accepting Him--otherwise, He wouldn't be good, just, and holy if He permitted evil), but instead is a loving Father that wants to give you a family. Better yet, if you're a part of that family, He cares too much for you to let you live in your sins without consequences. Yes, you do have a choice, but He will discipline you to protect you from more dangerous things. Just as a loving Father won't let His son touch a hot stove, so He keeps us from sins that will burn us.
