"I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry." -Psalm 40:1, KJV
Most people [Christians] who say, "God doesn't answer my prayers," are guilty of one of two things. First, there's asking simply because of lust (James 4:3). God will not answer prayers designed to help us sin. Second, and more common, is that we are impatient. We must wait patiently for the Lord if we expect Him to answer our prayers. Faith and patience are so interlinked in the Bible that they are virtually inseparable. God sees patience as a big part of faith, so we need to simply wait for Him.
"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss*, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." -James 4:3, KJV. *greek definition (because even I was unsure what "amiss" meant): badly (physically or morally): - amiss, diseased, evil, grievously, miserably, sick, sore
