"A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." -Proverbs 18:24, KJV.
We cannot expect to have others care about us when we don't care about others. The more we show ourselves as friends, the more friends we will have. This doesn't mean that everyone you are nice to will become your friend, but it will mean that you will have a better group of friends around you.
Most liken the second part of this verse to how much Jesus Christ is friends with us, and it is a good picture. (Although it was written hundreds of years before and was probably meant literally, the picture is both valid and helpful.) That said, let's look at the whole verse. Jesus Christ is an amazing Friend, with no requirement from us. But, how much better would our friendship with Him be if we showed ourselves friendly toward Him? Jesus Christ will always show Himself friendly to us, but if we return that, we will grow much faster and be much closer to Him than we would otherwise.
